Blackmore Vale Butchery in West Stour, North Dorset work closely with small, local farms that all have the highest animal husbandry and welfare standards, rearing contented, healthy animals with strong, natural immunities that thrive in small groups. Humane methods that produce really wholesome meat and help to maintain traditional farming values as part of a sustainable rural economy.

All our non-organic grass-fed meat will have a Followthisfood label on the pack showing you the small local farm the meat comes from, when it was produced and who produced it, giving you full traceability and fantastic engagement with our producer farms.

Blackmore Vale Butchery was the winner of the Taste of Dorset Awards, 2014, for “Outstanding contribution to local food development in Dorset" and was a shortlisted finalist in the 2016 Awards Best Butcher category.

The Blackmore Vale Butchery is proud to be a registered supplier as part of the EBLEX Quality Standard Mark scheme in which the beef and lamb produced are held to higher standards than that of the law. Quality Standard gives our customers very high levels of assurance about the beef and lamb they buy.

Meat is matured for three to four weeks to improve texture and flavour. After hanging, the meat is butchered, packaged and labelled for direct sale by the producers.

We use an ultra-violet beef and mutton maturing chiller and therefore our meat needs less cutting out (reducing wastage by 15%), which saves farmers money and reduces environmental impact.

The Blackmore Vale Butchery created the local butchery collaborative in 2010. The collaborative scheme was formed to allow small holders and farmers in the Dorset area to sell directly to the consumer. These producers requires a service where they can send their livestock to be butchered, packed and labelled to their own specific requirements, ready to be sold through the ordr.kitchen online platform. Through this service, the Blackmore Vale Butchery gives customers access to premium quality meat while supporting reared livestock direct sale from the farm.

All our non-organic grass-fed meat will have a Followthisfood label on the pack showing you the small local farm where it comes from, when it was produced and who produced it, giving you full traceability.

Simply scan the QR code on the pack of meat in to your smartphone, or enter the code in to a laptop or tablet and Followthisfood will enable you to see the provenance of each individual item. Each pack of local grass-fed meat is actively tracked from source to delivery tracing back to the individual producer farm in a way that is not possible with standardised, more widely available meat.

Followthisfood is an active food traceability application that also delivers information about individual breeds and their characteristics, and relevant and topical articles about animal husbandry, food production and farming, connecting the consumer more meaningfully with high quality food production techniques than other passive food traceability tools.
